Humour in the Hot Tub

There are seemingly endless ways hot tubs can be used in comedy; Saturday Night Live (SNL), over the past 30 years on the air, has most definitely found the most hilarious!

Our favourite example is Eddie Murphy acting as James Brown in the skit “James Brown’s Celebrity Hot Tub Party.”

Another funny man, previous cast member Will Ferrell used to star in “The Lovers” skits with Rachel Dratch, and numerous guest hosts. In many of these skits, the “couple” was in the hot tub, and they would discuss private details openly and to the utter disgust of anyone who may overhear them.

MadTV decided to get in on the hot tub comedy action with this skit about Lorraine and a Jacuzzi:

Have you ever had anything funny happen in a hot tub? Do you know of any funny hot tub skits or TV episodes we’re forgetting?

Steamy Scenes from Hollywood’s Hot Tubs

species_hottub

Who can resist a hot tub party? Not me! And not Hollywood, if you consider some of the scenes in which a hot tub had a part in a movie or TV show.

Charlie Wilson’s War opens with Tom Hanks’ character in a hot tub with several naked women.

Go back a few years to the movie Species, where Natasha Henstridge plays an alien who lures a man into a hot tub. Bet if you saw it you couldn’t stop watching because you wanted to know if he’d escape!

hot tub time machine movie shotMore recently, Hot Tub Time Machine was released, where John Cusack’s character Adam and pals somehow ended up in a hot tub that worked as a time machine. They went back and visited their younger selves, and ended up righting their present and future life paths.

Hollywood shows us that hot tubs can be sexy, dangerous and even help us realize we like ourselves; hot tubs may be one area where Hollywood is right about something, at least in my opinion.

American Dad Warms up Season 7 in the Hot Tub

hot tub american episode

Hot tubs are iconic; a pop culture phenomenon that sometimes pop up in the most unexpected places! This time, one has appeared in the newest season of American Dad.

American Dad, a sometimes crude, usually humourous Seth MacFarlane television creation, aired its seventh season premiere Sunday, September 25th.

In the episode, a hot tub makes an appearance! So does Cee Lo Green (of “Forget You” fame). In the episode, American Dad’s title character, Stan Smith, gets a hot tub and his life starts to fall apart (hilarious hijinks ensue).

See a teaser here (http://nerdcandy NULL.tumblr NULL.com/post/10490563789)!

Hot Tub Mythbusters

hot tub spaghetti

We’ve all heard them; there are simply tons of strange myths surrounding hot tubs. We thought it would be interesting to do a little sleuthing to see if any of these are actually true or if they are as ridiculous as they sound!

First up is whether or not you can cook spaghetti in a hot tub. This one sounds ridiculous, and it is! Hot tub water is usually around 40ᵒC (any higher than this is unsafe), and pasta requires boiling water in order to cook properly. If you left it in a hot tub long enough, the pasta might soften a bit, but it would also turn into a gloopy, yucky mess! Not to mention the fact that hot tubs are full of chlorine – not exactly a yummy pasta sauce.

Next up – can wearing jeans in a hot tub cause death or serious injury? The story goes that people attempt to shrink their jeans by wearing them into a hot tub for several hours, but the combination of swelling legs and shrinking jeans results in blood clots, which can be fatal. Mythbusters tested this one themselves, and deemed it “busted”! While the situation could hypothetically be dangerous, during their tests the subjects encountered no ill effects from shrinking jeans! Another myth we’ve seen about the dangers of hot tubs is that you can get suctioned to the bottom of a hot tub, causing drowning. This one seems to be true. There have been incidents in swimming pools where people have blocked the drain, and been suctioned to it, resulting in serious injuries or death. Newer model pumps should have automatic shut-offs that turn the suction off when the drain is blocked, but you may want to check with your manufacturer to ensure your hot tub pump has this function. Never sit on, or block a drain in any way, and be especially careful with long hair, which may get caught. Never remove the grate from the drain.

Finally, there is the debate over whether sweating helps to remove toxins from the body. Both sides of this argument have some good points, and we can’t tell who is right! But since hot tubbing is so relaxing, you might as well enjoy it anyways, and if you sweat out some toxins, that’s just icing on the cake! Just remember to drink enough water, or sweating can do more harm than good.

While some of these myths may sound silly, there’s something to be learned from all of them. So keep your food out of your hot tub, wear your bathing suit (who likes wet jeans anyways!), stay hydrated and never, ever mess with hot tub or pool drains!

Modern Family Steamy Hot Tub Scene

modernfamily_hottub-small

What would you do if you found a stranger in your hot tub?

In ABC’s hit show, Modern Family, the two lovable characters Mitch and Cam find a stranger enjoying their backyard spa in a recent episode. The two gay dads are at first appalled, but then are relieved to find out it is a charming, good looking male stranger, and decide to embrace the visitor by listening to his intriguing life stories, while soaking in the tub.

Hot tubs are great for socializing, but unlike Modern Family’s charming main characters, it’s probably best to call the police if you find a stranger enjoying your hot tub in real life!

Playboy’s Killer Hot Tub?

grotto

You have to hand it to Playboy founder Hugh Heffner – never a dull moment at his parties.

At one of the recent parties at the Playboy Mansion, over 120 guests were treated to the sometimes deadly Legionnaire’s Disease.

Los Angeles County public health inspectors report that legionella bacteria was found in the famous Grotto pool’s hot tub, easily one of the most sought-after tickets in the world.  Does Heffner do anything small?  The health department findings were presented at a conference in at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia.

Most of the guests who reported being sick showed the tell-tale symptoms, including fever, headache, coughing, shortness of breath and aching in their muscles. Sixty-nine of them became ill on the day of the party. Three guests also tested positive for the H1N1 flu.

It looks like the hot tub failed to kill any of its victims this time around, but it is considered by many to be armed and dangerous. Legionella is among the bacteria transmitted from contaminated aerosols that can grow in hot tubs when their maintenance and disinfection are not followed through properly.

The party was a fundraising event as part of the Domainfest conference, which hosted 700 delegates from 30 countries.  Well, at least this added some excitement to what would be considered by most people a pretty dull conference.

Meanwhile, Hugh Heffner, the 84-year-old publishing legend, is preparing in June to marry Crystal Harris, the 24-year-old Playboy Playmate of the month for December 2009.  Playboy is planning a wedding spread in the magazine.  Says Heffner, “It’s the Chinese year of the rabbit, so the bunny is back.”

They plan to marry at the Playboy Mansion, but perhaps they might want to keep a cover on their hot tub (http://www NULL.hottubcoverscanada NULL.ca).
