Hot Tub Party in My Room!

hot tub parties

Why meet fellow students in classes or the cafeteria, when you could install a hot tub in your dorm room and attract new friends and acquaintances that way?

Ohio University student Kevin Lenahan thought that would be a great idea, and installed a spa in his room. He frequently leaves the door open and people he doesn’t always know often pop by to use it.

“As a matter of fact on the weekends, it’s so convenient for me. I just leave the door open and people I’ve never met before come wandering on in, and that’s how I meet people. It’s been very convenient in that regard,” Lenahan was quoted as saying to KCTV 5 News in Kansas City. The University has asked him to remove it, citing several concerns, but Lenahan says he’ll fight the order since he hasn’t broken any current rules.

Interestingly, the University of Ohio isn’t the first postsecondary institution to discover a surprise spa. At the University of Michigan, it’s a mystery as to who installed a hot tub from one of their building’s roofs, and then removed it two days later just as quietly. The suspected culprits are what spokesman Steven Crang said are likely “creative” students. Hot tubs sure sound like a good way to make new friends, whether at university or at home!

LEGO® Offers Hot Tubs – Controversy Ensues

LEGO®, well-known plastic block and toy maker, recently launched LEGO Friends — a new and, it turns out, somewhat controversial line of toys.

As an initiative put together simply to market to young girls (because their current market includes mostly young boys, and as CEO Jorgan Vig Knudstorp was quoted as saying, “We want to reach the other 50 percent of the world’s population”), the line includes a lot of pink and pastel colours. There are five female dolls offered now too, along with buildings such as a beauty salon and a fashion design studio. There’s even a “splash pool” that appears to be a hot tub.

Some parents are up in arms over the entire line of toys (http://stonemountain NULL.patch NULL.com/articles/moms-talk-gender-stereotyping-by-toymakers-6ea36913), claiming that it is full of gender stereotyping. Stephanie Cole says in an article on Patch.com, ” … if you keep on excluding [girls] from your marketing vision, soon they will start to believe that they would rather have hot tubs and little plastic boobs.”

We’re sure she doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with hot tubs, even though there is something wrong with gender stereotyping — whether or not you believe LEGO means to stereotype.

Regardless of the cause, perhaps it’s why this LEGO advertisement from 1973 has started making the rounds on the Internet recently:

Do hot tubs belong in LEGO play sets? We don’t see anything wrong with little girls AND boys having a toy hot tub — as long as kids are safe and supervised when in the real thing!

A Hot Tub of Happiness for a Deserving Girl

spa_kids

Savannah Wilson, a 16-year-old blind, disabled girl from Lake Stevens, Washington, was granted a wish from the Make-a-Wish Foundation in September. While most wishes granted seem to be more along the lines of trips to Disneyland, all she wanted was a hot tub!

Savannah was described in an article in the Herald as having “a prognosis where her life span will be decreased but we just live life and let her be happy and be a kid,” by her mother, Sharon Jordan. “She is the happiest kid on earth and loves people and animals and music and playing.”

Savannah faces many challenges and a shortened life span due to her health conditions, but it seems she doesn’t let the negatives outweigh the positives and finds joy everywhere.

It may serve as a reminder to the rest of us that sometimes, despite all of our troubles, all it takes to be happy is something simple, like warm bubbles and time spent with friends and family in the backyard hot tub.

Hot Tub Bandits

spa thief

While finding a bear taking a soak in your outdoor spa might be cute (although alarming!), burglars are another story!

The Telegraph (http://www NULL.telegraph NULL.co NULL.uk/news/uknews/crime/8204047/Hot-Tub-Gang-gets-clean-away-after-targeting-homes-with-outdoor-spas NULL.html) reports that the latest trend in burglaries in the UK seems to be robbers who like to relax in the hot tub before leaving secretly with thousands of pounds worth of stolen goods. In an even more bizarre twist, it seems the culprits like to leave their wet underwear at the scene of the crime after taking a dip!

Let’s hope this strange trend doesn’t spread to Canada, but just in case, remember to always lock your doors and windows, and don’t assume that a backyard fence will be as effective in keeping out humans as it is for other furry critters!

Hippo’s Like Hot Tubs Too!

Animals at the London Zoo are treated to all the luxuries that make a frigid British winter bearable. Meerkats get to bask in the warmth of heat lamps scattered throughout their cage, while hippos get . . a hot tub!

The two hippos at the London Zoo are originally from Africa, so it only seemed fitting that they get special accommodations to help them adjust to a harsh London winter! With “Thug” and “Nicola” having extremely fragile skin, it is important that the hippos have access to warm and soothing water during the winter months in order to prevent skin cracking.

Despite their cute and cuddly appearance, hippos are the animal responsible for the most human kills in Africa while defending their territory, so we don’t suggest hopping in this particular hot tub!
