Hot Tubs Help Diabetics

Hot Tubs for Type 2 Diabetes

After years of doctors telling diabetics to stay out of hot tubs, it seems that advice is starting to change. Apparently soaking in a hot tub is actually beneficial to people suffering from type 2 diabetes.

In this age of obesity, diabetes has become something of an epidemic. Currently one out of every 10 people over the age of 20 has diabetes and there is now a pressing need for treatment and therapy for these people. Of course diabetics still have to be careful, those with a more advanced condition of diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage) are at risk of burning themselves as they can’t accurately measure the temperature of the water. But for the majority of sufferers, ‘hot tub therapy’ is beneficial.

One doctor had his diabetic patients sit in a hot tub for 30 minutes, 6 times a week, and after 3 weeks he measured a significant decrease in blood glucose levels. Apparently the increase in body temperature and blood flow provided benefits similar to that of moderate exercise.

Of course medical studies aside, it’s always best to err on the side of caution. If you do suffer from diabetes, keep a close eye on your blood glucose levels before getting in a hot tub, confirm that you know exactly what the water temperature is, and make sure there is always someone with you while you’re soaking should you need any kind of assistance.

Hot Tub Boats

hot tub boats

Warm weather is back and that means it’s time once again to relax and have fun in the great outdoors! Winter is long so we Canadians always take advantage of our good weather by spending as much time as we can outside. So what’s it going to be then? Relaxing in your outdoor hot tub or boating on the lake? What if I told you that it’s possible to do both at the same time?

Yep, a start up company called ‘Hot Tub Boats’ has created the first, you guessed it, hot tub in a boat! Although it probably takes an uncommon mind to think of something as far out as sitting in hot water while floating on cool water, It’s really not that complicated. You get in a boat, the boat has a hot tub in it, you cruise around a lake while taking in the view, chatting with friends and of course, soaking in warm, soothing waters. What could be better than that?

You may wonder how you’re supposed to drive and maneuver the boat when you’re busy relaxing in your floating tub? Apparently it’s easy and the boat can be controlled remotely from anywhere in the tub.

If you’re thinking you’d like to buy or rent a boat, both are possible, but currently you can only rent one in Seattle (why does so much cool stuff come from there?) However you can be sure that a hot idea like this will spread like wildfire and be in your city soon, as long as you have a lake nearby of course!

Hot Tub Party in My Room!

hot tub parties

Why meet fellow students in classes or the cafeteria, when you could install a hot tub in your dorm room and attract new friends and acquaintances that way?

Ohio University student Kevin Lenahan thought that would be a great idea, and installed a spa in his room. He frequently leaves the door open and people he doesn’t always know often pop by to use it.

“As a matter of fact on the weekends, it’s so convenient for me. I just leave the door open and people I’ve never met before come wandering on in, and that’s how I meet people. It’s been very convenient in that regard,” Lenahan was quoted as saying to KCTV 5 News in Kansas City. (http://www NULL.kctv5 NULL.com/story/17113698/student-installs-hot-tub-in-dorm-room-as-way-to-meet-mingle)

The University has asked him to remove it, citing several concerns, but Lenahan says he’ll fight the order since he hasn’t broken any current rules.

Interestingly, the University of Ohio isn’t the first postsecondary institution to discover a surprise spa. At the University of Michigan, it’s a mystery as to who installed a hot tub from one of their building’s roofs, and then removed it two days later just as quietly. The suspected culprits are what spokesman Steven Crang said are likely “creative” students. Hot tubs sure sound like a good way to make new friends, whether at university or at home!

Spa Snacking – Clean and Tidy

tray spa accessory

It’s probably not a good idea to eat sloppy spaghetti, or most anything, really, while in (or near) the hot tub. But if you’re entertaining, it’s likely you’ll want to offer up a few drinks and snacks to guests. So what to offer that won’t mess or clog up your spa? What about the dishes on which to serve your treats?

Fear not; we can help you narrow down your choices and ensure your spa stays clean and tidy with three simple rules for spa snacking.

Rule 1: Think plastic. Don’t offer up your crystal champagne glasses, or even your regular everyday dinnerware. All it takes is one neighbour’s kid to take your nice plate into his slippery, wet hands, and drop it. Food in the hot tub, broken dishes on the ground — bare feet beware! Use plastic cutlery, plates, bowls and cups (not paper — paper plates and water is another recipe for disaster). Don’t forget: After your party, plastic dinnerware can be washed and reused, or recycled!

Rule 2: Think finger foods that won’t get soggy. Don’t serve up already-soggy foods like pasta with sauce, anything soupy or your Grandma’s famous jambalaya. Finger foods like veggie sticks are less messy, easy to eat, and if one happens to make its way into your spa, it’s easy enough to fish out. Tiny cut-up sandwiches are cute, but damp hands can make for soggy bread. If you want to offer cheese, meat, pickles or the like, consider offering toothpicks for picking them up (as long as your guests aren’t children who will leave sharp little toothpicks all over your yard).

Rule 3: Think simple. Don’t overdo it. You don’t have to be Martha Stewart or the Barefoot Contessa when you’re throwing a hot tub party. If you use plastic dinnerware, offer simple finger foods, and offer a few extras (such as some hand sanitizer, towels for drying hands, bags for garbage and recycling nearby, etc.), you’re ahead of the game as far as keeping everything clean.

Do you have any ideas for snacking at a hot tub party? Any horror stories or success stories? We’d love to hear from you!

Hot Tubs and Real Estate

hot tubs and real estate prices

Do hot tubs help a house sell? Ask any real estate agent and he or she will likely tell you that it depends on several different factors. If you are currently selling or thinking of listing your home for sale, consider the following.

First, who is your buyer? If you live in an expensive neighbourhood, buyers looking in your area are likely to desire “luxury” amenities such as a hot tub. If you live in a neighbourhood where hot tubs aren’t common, it’s possible that yours could give you an advantage over competition that is similar in other ways (location; price; proximity to shopping, transit and schools; size of house and lot). However, if the buyers who are looking to buy in your area are simply looking for the basics, the idea of having to pay to maintain a hot tub may be a deal breaker.

Second, what are you selling? This ties into who your buyer is. If you are selling a luxury home or a fancy ski chalet, a hot tub may be desired or even expected. If you are selling a townhouse in an area where there are no hot tubs, consider carefully whether having one will give you an advantage or scare off potential buyers. Are you in an up-and-coming neighbourhood? Or is it full of families who have to struggle a bit more?

Third, have you maintained it well while it has been yours? If you are selling a place with a hot tub that hasn’t been maintained, it will likely drag down your property value. Who would want to buy a place with a hot tub that needs major maintenance, or worse, a full replacement? A buyer might even ask for a reduced price if it’s going to actually cost him or her more money, or is an eyesore on the property!

There are many considerations when it comes to real estate and hot tubs, but if you do the proper maintenance on yours and keep it looking its best, hopefully a hot tub or spa will help and not hinder your efforts to sell.
